Mike Barfield
Is
The Tyrant of Texas Funk

Mike Barfield is probably one of the few people on the planet who has opened for both Merle Haggard and Bernie Worrell of P Funk. He is part of a somewhat forgotten legacy of lead singers/frontmen who comfortably mix genres together and possess a command of the stage that is both unique and inspiring. Although remembered as the singer/songwriter of the popular Texas-based band, The Hollisters, for the past few years Mike Barfield has established himself as a solo artist and performer in one of the most competitive areas for live music in the country. He currently calls Austin, TX home but was raised in the gritty Gulf Coast area in the southernmost end of Houston - once called Genoa.

A dynamic singer and showman, Barfield was voted best male vocalist by the Houston Press readers’ poll in 1996. In 2006, one noted Austin music critic stated that he is one of the best singers working in Texas today. His talent has attracted some of the best sidemen Austin has to offer, and he has become a staple of the renowned Continental Club. On a road trip to the Midwest three years ago, a club manager dubbed Barfield "The Tyrant of Tx Funk,” and the moniker stuck, becoming the title of his last release.

His latest release, completed in 2004 and released in 2005, comprises 10 original songs written or co-written by Barfield and his most recent collaborator, Mike Flanigin, who provides the B3 organ sounds and background vocals in Barfield’s recording and live performances. The rest of his band includes Damian Llanes on drums, guitar player, Johnny Moeller, and bassist, Scott Nelson. Barfield is set to begin work on a new recording in 2008

The live shows must be seen as well as heard. Each show is a tour de force of blue-eyed funk and soul with screaming vocals and sweaty dance moves. Come witness for yourself the power of Barfield, "the Tyrant of TX Funk,” and his band of showmen.
